Restore Yaquina Bay: Volunteer Cleanup to Tackle Oyster Aquaculture Debris

Oyster aquaculture is a pillar of Oregon’s coastal economy—but with it comes a pressing environmental challenge: marine debris. Polystyrene floats and docks used in farming oysters can break down over time, contributing to a growing problem in our estuaries.

This spring, our Newport Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is joining forces with Oregon Oyster Farms, the MidCoast Watersheds Council, and Lincoln County Solid Waste District for a series of cleanup events focused on Poole Slough in Yaquina Bay. Together, we’re removing debris, restoring shorelines, and helping one of Oregon’s oldest oyster farms transition to more sustainable practices.

Join us for a rewarding day of action!
We’re calling on volunteers of all ages to help clean up legacy foam, rope, and plastic debris that’s washed into the slough over the years. These community cleanups are fun, educational, and hands-on—an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and make a real impact alongside friends, family, and fellow stewards of the bay.

  • Remove marine debris from the shoreline, especially old polystyrene dock material

  • Learn about Oregon Oyster Farms’ sustainability efforts

  • Connect with local partners and fellow volunteers

  • Enjoy snacks, good company, and the satisfaction of protecting our estuary

Light refreshments provided at arrival and BBQ oysters to follow!

Healthy waterways depend on community action. Every volunteer counts—and community efforts like this truly make a difference for Yaquina Bay’s future.
